The companys idea of making soap was born from the founder of the Lever Brothers, William Lever, who saw the company rapidly grow as the most popular in promoting cleanliness in Victorian England. The companys growth was eminent (Barth, Wolff, 2009, pp. 161). In the 1930s, the Lever Brothers merged with a Dutch margarine making company, Margarine Unie, to form the Unilever Company, a strong global corporation which would result in the creation of new opportunities (Unilever, 2014). Despite some economic difficulty which was characterized by a great depression and the Second World War, Unilever Company continued to expand in growth. The companys growth featured the widening of its business areas and the creation of new b usiness areas such as food and chemical manufactures. Today, Unilever is the worlds leading manufacturer and seller of consumed product brands in food, beverages, personal care and home care. The company mainly deals with fast moving consumer goods. Unilevers product range is comprised of, but not limited to, Blue Band, Vaseline, Rexona, Lifebuoy, Brooke bond and Surf. The company stands as a dual-listed company which comprises of Unilever PLC in London and Unilever NV in Rotterdam (The Guardian, 2010).Unilevers deals in producing, distributing and the eventually selling of the most essential commodities has made it the most revered player in the fast moving consumer goods industry.IntroductionThe planet earth is composed of a vast three dimensional interconnected web of energy flows and life forms. Years ago, the world appeared to be the size of whatever culture we lived within and felt as if it were stable and unchangeable. Presently, the world is understood to be planetary in sca le, characterized by a very fast change and situated either at the threshold of a planetary disaster of unprecedented magnitude or at the beginning of a new era of sustainability. According to Linnenluecke, and Grifà ¯Ã ths (2010), the adoption of sustainable development takes place through changes in the values and beliefs adopted by organizations towards moreethical and more responsible values. Essentially, these values and beliefs adopted by organizations form what is referred to as organizational culture. More specifically and according to McLaughlin (2013), culture can be defined as the values and beliefs which govern the behavior of stakeholders of an organization. These values and beliefs are shared among the various stakeholders in an organization and they dictate how an organization performs its operation in order to meet stakeholders expectations. It is this culture that influences how organizational decisions will affect an organizations stakeholders. In their own uniq ue ways, organizations develop and maintain cultures which provide guidelines and limits to how stakeholders behave. Indeed, culture forms the basis for treating an organizations stakeholders with the respect and dignity they deserve.Robertson (2014)notes that sustainability is about seeing and recognizing the dynamic, cyclical and interdependent nature of all the parts and pieces of life on earth. Put in a more business specific terms, sustainability can be perceived as the attempt by corporations to balance todays business practices while at the same time maintaining the environment for future generations. Therefore, sustainable development encompasses all the economic and social development which preserves the earths ecosystem for the present and future generations (Western Libraries, 2014). Mirrored on the above, this paper aims at analyzing Unilevers sustainable development as a theoretical framework used in the study of organizational culture to conduct an analysis of Unileve rs culture.JustificationAs highlighted above and as noted by Sustainability Indices (2014), sustainable development or sustainability can be viewed as a business practice that fosters the creation of long term stakeholder value by embracing opportunities and bringing risks deriving from the economy, environment, and social development to a manageable level . It is important to consider sustainable development of any corporation because sustainability is critical to the creation of long term stakeholder value in a world which is increasingly becoming resource constrained. Additionally, sustainable business practices represent risks and opportunities that companies in a competitive environment must address. Sustainability factors have a major contribution on the changing business world which impact on companies top and bottom lines. Challenges which can be viewed in the long-term such as climate change, resource scarcity and demographic shifts are redefining the expectations of the so ciety, regulatory frameworks, and public policies (Searcy, 2009). Consequently, the business environments and investment outcomes are affected. These challenges provide for new risks and opportunities that must be addressed by companies now in order to remain competitive in the future. As noted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (2014), Companies that expect and manage todays and tomorrows economic, environmental and societal opportunities and risks by putting focus on productivity, innovation and quality will come out as leaders and are more likely to have a competitive advantage and a long-term shareholder value. Developing and implementing sustainable business strategies enable companies to gain competitive advantage. Sustainable practices are therefore seen as business opportunities, a perspective which represents a new paradigm in corporate culture. The shift is revolutionary and is a force that is reshaping todays business world. Moreover, in efforts to promote sustainable development among companies, world environmental organizations such as the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), requires that corporations participate in corporate sustainability reporting. In this reporting, companies measure and disclose sustainability information integrated with the companys reporting practices that exist. Sustainability information contains information on how companies utilize and impact upon financial, natural and human resources (UNEP, 2014). It is therefore relatively important that an organization practices corporate sustainability.Nevertheless, rapid globalization that began in the 1990s has had a profound impact on the perception of the global business community on matters sustainability. The business community has become more conscious than ever of the importance of sustainability as it relates to the environment, ethical issues and the economy. Contemporary organizations and businesses have generally progressed in their att itudes and commitments toward the importance of sustainability (Brockett, Rezaee, 2012, pp. 167). Indeed, every business sector has its own unique impact on global sustainability but the general importance of sustainability for the business environment is somehow common in all the business industries. These factors form the basis for analyzing Unilevers sustainable development as compared to other theoretical framework that might have been considered for organizational analysis. An Explanation of Sustainable Development and its ConceptsSustainable development became popular as a term after the publication of the Brundtland report in 1987. In the report, the definition of sustainable development is provided for as the ability of the present generation to meet its needs without disregard of the future generations ability to meet its own. This definition is viewed as the classical definition of sustainable development (Drexhage Murphy, 2010). Relative to sustainable development, sustain ability can be defined as the process of delivering products and services that are competitively priced and yield satisfaction to human needs, while at the same time reduce environmental impacts and utilize the minimum possible resources at most to a level that corresponds with the estimated carrying capacity of the Earth (Australia's financial sector in sustainability). Over the past two decades, the business environment has seen firms being scrutinized and put under great pressure with their stakeholders comprising of the government, regulators and investors to focus on sustainability. The fast moving consumer goods manufacturing companies such as Unilever bear the potential to promote the principles of sustainability through its activities which include manufacturing, supplying and selling of products as well as through its internal policies and processes. Traditionally, firms in various industries have considered corporate sustainability reporting just as an economic issue. Howe ver, the contemporary business environment has made firms to be aware of the social, ethical and environmental issues of corporate performance, which have gained momentum over the years (Rezaee, 2011, pp. 55).According to Anderson (2014), the major issue of concern for firms is the public perception that any business is guilty of exploiting its customers as well as the general business environment in which it operates. As a result, companies are not viewed entirely as a sustainable entity by the general public but only as a business sector which functions to fulfill only the shareholders interests. Nonetheless, as a result of the growing global attention given to issues of sustainability, there is increasing evidence that sustainability is a way of doing good business let alone just busin... nicolelittle186http://www.blogger.com/profile/13485321557491943650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4200252232504817812.post-26764858962030372312020-05-17T07:01:00.001-07:002020-05-17T07:01:12.632-07:00Gun Control And Its Effect On The Country - 1310 Words Eliot Spitzer, the fifty fourth governor of New York, once said, ââ¬Å"Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Also, it doesn t matter how much hate is in the man who pulls the trigger, like in a mass shooting, the absolute amount of damage a gun can do in a span of five to ten minutes is tremendous, thus giving the reason to limit the type of guns that one get obtain. The changes are seen in the fragile neuronal homeostatic balances where changes in the elevations of glutamate and potassium have been identified. The effects of concussions have also been seen in the functioning of the brain rather than in the structure of the brain itself. Being identified as mild traumatic brain injuries, occurring due to a bump or jolt to head or neck, concussions can result in both short-term and long-term effects. Although most individuals are able to recover from these head injuries, a small but relevant portion of individuals have been found to suffer from chronic long-term effects including early onsets of Alzheimer disease, clinical depression and other cognitive complications. The occurrence of a secondary concussion during the recovery phase of a primary concussion, also recognized as the second impact syndrome, has been shown to increase the risk for long-term effects of cerebral and neurological failure as the neurons have become incapable of experiencing normal functions after an initial traumatic brain injury. The recoveries from these initial concussions are critical to prevent the onset of long-term effects. Essay Example For Students Citizenship, A Right And A Responsibility?. Essay When I think of America I think of freedom and citizenship. The right to vote or the right of free speech are aspects that, as citizens, we posses. Being born in America automatically gives you these rights and many more, and most importantly, you become a citizen. Now, with citizenship comes responsibility such as obeying the law and paying taxes. So if you follow these simple rules does this make you an effective citizen? This question, in my opinion, is almost impossible to answer for a number of reasons, which will be addressed in the following paper. It was extremely hard to come up with a clear cut answer as to what an effective citizen entails. I grappled with this term through many drafts and in the end came up with many conclusions about effective citizenship. Let me state my main point of this paper, and that is, effective citizenship entails so many things and the true meaning of a good citizen differs from person to person and from time to time. In this paper I will share with you how the idea of effective citizenship varies according to person and time and my personal beliefs on what is effective citizenship. As an American citizen I have a responsibility to this country as a citizen. I also have rights because I am a citizen of this country. Firstly, as stated above, being a citizen of America entitles me to certain inalienable rights, and among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (Jefferson, 352). Thomas Jefferson made sure that as American citizens, each and everyone of us has these rights which are documented in the The Declaration of Independence. Each citizen has rights and with these rights comes responsibility, responsibility to themselves as citizens and to the country. In my opinion, as citizens, we must make certain sacrifices for a greater cause. These sacrifices include paying taxes and obeying laws. We pay a portion of our hard earned money to the government which is for the greater good of the country. The tax money goes to funding for better schools which we send our children to and for better roads. The money also goes to pay for police and fire protection which we depend upon every day, these people are a necessity to our daily lives. Citizens must also abide by certain laws, which in the mind of some citizens, is a sacrifice. My answer to them is that we are not in a state of nature and this is a price you have to pay for living in a society. In their mind, if they were in a state of nature then they would not have to abide by such laws. As John Locke pointed out, we all are here for the preservation of mankind. We make these sacrifices for protection and, in the end, not only benefit the individual but also benefit the community, society, or nation. (Locke, pgs. 170-171, 180-186). So each citizen, in order to (in Abraham Lincolns words) form a more perfect union, must make certain sacrifices which in the end, not only helps you but helps others, this is one of our responsibilities as citizens. Finally, in regards to this paragraph, someone who DOES fulfill his or her responsibilities, are good citizens, but that is not the whole definition of a good citizen, it is simply one part of a bigger picture. The question can now be raised, if one follows and fulfills these responsibilities does that really make them a good citizen? If a person follows the laws and pays his or her taxes, does that make them a good or effective citizen? In my opinion, it all depends upon the person defining the term effective citizenship. .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .postImageUrl , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:hover , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:visited , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:active { border:0!important; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:active , .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845 .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u57be65909c22aa34245a986f6ef90845:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Childhood Obesity Essay Each person has different beliefs and or values and these effect there definition on effective citizenship. In this paper I had the privilege to discuss how Nursing has evolved from being an occupation to being a profession and an academic discipline. According to the Collins English Dictionary, An occupation isa persons regular work or profession; job or principal activity, any activity on which time is spent by a person, the act of occupying or the state of being occupied, the control of a country by a foreign military and the period of time that a nation, place, or position is occupied. Occupation is an activity or task with which one occupies oneself; usually specifically the productive activity, service, trade, or craft for which one is regularly paid. One way to promote development is to clarify the professional role. We will write a custom essay sample on Nursing Has Evolved from Being an Occupation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Oxford English Dictionary defines a profession as a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification and in its definition of a professional; the dictionary uses the words competent, skillful, or assured. Professional competence and skills are learnt through specialized training, maintained through continuing professional development and embedded in the notion of behaving ethically, in the interest of the client or patient, the public or society. Professions play a role in every part of human society, and we all rely on professionals at multiple points in our daily lives from dentists to teachers, from pension managers to careers advisors, from town planners to paramedics. We rely on professionals to be experts, to know what to do when we need them to, and to act in our best interests. Back in the nineteenth century, the professions were seen to be law, religion, and medicine. Nowadays, the number of professions is ever-increasing, as occupations become more specialized in nature and more professionalized in terms of requiring certain standards of initial and ongoing education so that anything from automotive technicians to web designers can be defined as professionals. The words occupation and profession are interchangeable. Profession and occupation are almost the same, with only minor differences between them. The difference between occupation and profession can be stated with a simple example: Designing a building would be called a profession, whereas, constructing a building is an occupation. A profession needs extensive training and specialized knowledge. On the other hand, an occupation does not need any extensive training. A person with an occupation need not have specialized knowledge of his trade. A profession can be called an occupation when a person is paid for his particular skills, and his deep knowledge. Doctors, engineers, advocates, journalists, scientists, and many others, fall under the professional category. On the other hand, persons engaged in an occupation are not paid for their knowledge, but only for what they produce. Drivers, clerks and technicians fall under the category of occupation. Unlike a person engaged in an occupation, a professional has to undergo higher education. It is noticeable that a profession tends to be autonomous. When considering responsibilities, a profession demands that the responsibility lies with the individual. Moreover, only a professional will be able to assess fellow professionals. In regards to an occupation, no one has autonomous power; he or she is supervised by another person. Moreover, any person can make assessments, as this type of work does not require high degrees of knowledge and skill. Well, professionals enjoy a higher social status than a person engaged in an occupation. Another difference that can be seen between profession and occupation is that the former is guided through certain ethical codes, and is regulated by a certain statute. The term discipline originates from the Latin words discipulus, whichmeans pupil, and disciplina, which means teaching (noun). Related to it is also the word disciple as in the disciples of Jesus. A dictionary definition will give a whole range of quite different meanings of the term from training to submission to an authority to the control and self-control of behavior. As a verb it means training someone to follow a rigorous set of instructions, but also punishing and enforcing obedience. The medical meaning of discipline is a medical regimen imposed by a doctor on a patient to the patientââ¬â¢s benefit. It follows that the academic discipline can be seen as a form of specific and rigorous scientific training that will turn out practitioners who have been disciplined by their discipline for their own ood. In addition, discipline also means policing certain behaviors or ways of thinking. Individuals who have deviated from their discipline can be brought back in line or excluded. As a result, there is an important moral dimension to discipline that defines how people should behave or think. As previously mentioned, the term academic discipline certainly incorporates many el ements of the meaning of discipline. At the same time, it has also become a technical term for the organization of learning and the systematic production of new knowledge. Often disciplines are identified with taught subjects, but clearly not every subject taught at university can be called a discipline. There is more to disciplines than the fact that something is a subject taught in an academic setting. In fact, there is a whole list of criteria and characteristics, which indicate whether a subject is indeed a distinct discipline. A general list of characteristics would include disciplines have a particular object of research (e. g. aw, society, politics), though the object of research maybe shared with another discipline, disciplines have a body of accumulated specialist knowledge referring to their object of research, which is specific to them and not generally shared with another discipline, disciplines have theories and concepts that can organizethe accumulated specialist knowledge effectively, disciplines use specific terminologies or a specific technical language adjusted to their research object, disciplines have developed specific research met hods according to their specific research requirements and maybe most crucially, disciplines must have some institutional manifestation in the form of subjects taught at universities or colleges, respective academic departments and professional associations connected to it. Only through institutionalization are disciplines able to reproduce themselves from one generation to the next by means of specific educational preparation. A new discipline is therefore usually founded by the way of creating a professional leader devoted to it at an established university. Some disciplines would be considered to be more useful, more rigorous, more difficult, or more important than others. Nurses have specialized education and training validated by professional licensure. Nurses have a code of ethics and established practice standards, they are bound to adhere to, a violation of which can result in their license being revoked or sanctioned. They have their own body of ongoing research that shapes and governs our practice. Nurses work autonomously within their scope of practice. They formulate and carry out their own plan of care for clients when applicable; they apply judgment, use critical thinking skills, and make nursing diagnoses. Nurses use their specialized knowledge, experience, and skill set to initiate live-saving measures, improve and promote the health and well-being of the planet, and ease pain, suffering, and loss. They are all united in that common mission regardless of where they work, their position title, or whether they are employed, unemployed, or self-employed. Nursing has evolved from being an occupation to being a profession and an academic discipline. Nursing is variously described as a profession, a discipline, an occupation. The meanings assigned to such words and the expectations, demands, and responsibilities that each reveals to and or exacts from those privileged to call themselves registered nurse provides a splendid arena for viewing the struggle of nursing as an intellectual endeavor embedded in its own distinctive knowledge base, experiences, purposes, and values. Currently, pressure exerted within and without nursing to adopt the self-limiting potential and subordinated position that a professional discipline orientation and applied degree education talk on nursing is increasing. Nurses roles and mission, ideals, and ethical and practice standards are one a profession and also the attributes of an academic discipline. nicolelittle186http://www.blogger.com/profile/13485321557491943650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4200252232504817812.post-29422103488268561922020-03-15T12:29:00.001-07:002020-03-15T12:29:02.227-07:00Tom Jones essaysTom Jones essays Tom Jones, by Henry Fielding is a novel that is identical to a soap opera. This book deals with everything from treachery to lust to deceit. He writes about a man and womans love for one another and that nothing can stand in their way. Class separates them and they will not let that stop them. Acquired a discretion and prudence very uncommon in one of his lively parts. This is a quote from Squire Allworthy to Tom. I believe that Fieldings purpose in writing this novel was purely to entertain. He also added stabs at the class society in medieval England. He wrote this novel to inspire hope in the people of his time. He wanted them to go for their dreams and never to give up hope. But most of all this was for entertainment. Humans like to see lives that are in more turmoil than their own. This is why we have soap operas on television today. He achieves this by using characters that seem to be imaginable. He puts these characters in amazing situations. When the reader believes that they have something pinned he puts in another twist that sends your senses spiraling. A specific instance in the novel is when the reader finds out that Mrs. Waters is actually Jenny Jones who is Toms mother. He sleeps with Mrs. Waters not knowing this. Fielding does not unveil this secret until the end of the novel. The major problem in the book is simple. There is a deceitful man named Blifil. He and Tom are going after the same woman, Sophia Western. Blifil is a kaniving person and besmirches the reputation of Tom. He makes up lies that hurt Toms chances with Sophia. Tom is also a bastard and Sophia's father does not want her to marry a bastard. But he does want her to marry Blifil because he is in line to inherit a large estate. After arguments and many other incidences the truth is revealed. Everyone finds out that Tom is the good one and Blifil is the bad one. Tom also gets the ... nicolelittle186http://www.blogger.com/profile/13485321557491943650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4200252232504817812.post-13380375551360613322020-02-28T02:55:00.001-08:002020-02-28T02:55:02.875-08:00Proposed Action Plan to End Police Discrimination EssayProposed Action Plan to End Police Discrimination - Essay Example (CNN.com, 1). Tabatabainejad may or may not have been justified in his actions, but from the videotape of the event, it appears that the police were certainly not justified in their actions. Campus police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein commented, "This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours" (CNN.com). But one wonders if this is actually the case. Would the police have treated a white male in the same way We are also seeing this same kind of behavior occurring within our own police force. The only way this problem can be stopped is by creating a plan of action that would require a major overhaul in the way the police officers of this city think about the people in the community, and vice versa. The needs assessment for this plan is described below. Recently, the police department has been under fire for its rough treatment of students of color during protests on the college campus. In fact, this type of police-student interaction has increased almost 75 percent in the past year. On the other hand, police violence against white students during protests has decreased 50 percent in the same period of time. Obviously, there is a disparity here that needs to be addressed. Our officers routinely neglect the investigation of crimes committed against minority groups so that they can spend more time on crimes against white people. They do not even respond to calls from minority neighborhoods in a timely manner. Of the 5,000 emergency calls the department received over the past year, 1,500 were from white citizens, while 3,500 were from minority citizens (black, Hispanic, Asian, and Middle Eastern). Ninety percent of the 1,500 white citizens' calls were responded to within a day, with an average of 50 police work hours going into investigating each of these calls. Only 30 percent of the 3,500 minority calls were responded to within a day, with an average of about 12 work hours put forth toward the investigation of these calls. This represents a serious neglect of duty when it comes to making sure that the safety needs of all citizens are addressed. Problem 3: Police harassment of minority owned and frequented businesses The department gets calls all the time from minority-owned and frequented businesses about the lack of respect, and the amount of grief, they get from the neighborhood officers. Over the past year, these incidents have increased 50-60 percent. It is unclear whether this really reflects a shift in police actions, since the number of minority-owned businesses in the community has also increased significantly. Still, it represents a disturbing trend. Problem 4: Racial slurs directed toward minority communities The officers on this force have, at times, been known to speak to Hispanics and other minority groups using derogatory language and racial slurs. Hundreds of calls have been received from concerned citizens about this issue. These incidents represent an increase of about ten percent over the past year, but this does not even reflect the number of remarks that go unnoticed or unreported. It is likely that there are many such cases. Sadly, this discriminatory nicolelittle186http://www.blogger.com/profile/13485321557491943650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4200252232504817812.post-13292978230150067602020-02-11T19:39:00.001-08:002020-02-11T19:39:02.508-08:00A Tropical Paradise Called Bohol Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 wordsA Tropical Paradise Called Bohol - Essay Example Visiting a foreign place always gets butterflies fluttering in oneââ¬â¢s guts due to the excitement and anxiety of the unfamiliar environment he or she is about to experience.à The thought of a far-off tropical paradise usually arouses much thrill.à This is what I feel right now as I embark on a tour of a province in the Philippines called Bohol, situated in the Visayas, the second largest group of islands in this Asian country (Lonely Planet Travel Information).à I have heard much about the tourist spots in the Philippines, and Bohol is one place garnering much praise.à Perhaps that is why I am among a plane filled with foreigners from America and Europe and yes, also Asia, to visit this pristine place that promises one to forget his worries and indulge in the pleasures it offers weary bodies and souls. Itââ¬â¢s such a beautiful country! The land, the people, the climate, everything is amazing! Iââ¬â¢ve gotten to experience the most remarkable/wonderful things, things I never could have imagined. As you know I went here as an exchange student and Iââ¬â¢m living with a wonderful host family in Brisbane. They have been very welcoming and loving, the student exchange agency made such a good match. Brisbane is located in the east of Australia, in the state called Queensland. Iââ¬â¢m attending the Brisbane State High School where Iââ¬â¢m taking all the mandatory classes like English, mathââ¬â¢s, science, social studies, art, health and physical education and so on. Iââ¬â¢ve gotten to continue my French education as well, but everyone in that class is way better than me! Luckily they are all so nice and very patient with me, and that goes for all the classes! I had a hard time understanding the Australian accent at first, but it gets easier and easier every day. My host family taught me some Aussie-slang to help me out a bit, like ââ¬Å"hoo rooâ⬠which means goodbye, ââ¬Å"ripperâ⬠means something like fantastic or great, ââ¬Å"sheilaâ⬠is a girl and ââ¬Å"dunnyâ⬠is a toilet. A word thatââ¬â¢s very confusing is ââ¬Å"thongsâ⬠. It does not mean what you think it means! Itââ¬â¢s another word for flip-flops, which can create quite an awkward situation. Fortunately I managed not to humiliate myself! Anyway, like I said are there mandatory classes just like there is in Sweden. Australia has a national curriculum to make sure that they have the same educational standards in schools all over the country, which resembles our ââ¬Å"Skolverketâ⬠. You asked a lot about the schools over here in your last letter, so Iââ¬â¢ve asked my new friends in my classes and found out some basic info. Like, something thatââ¬â¢s similar to Swedish schools is that youââ¬â¢re in kindergarten or pre-school when youââ¬â¢re 3-5 years old. In Australia you go to Primary School between the ages 6 to 11, unlike Sweden where we go to ââ¬Å"Là ¥gstadietâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Mellanstadietâ⬠when weââ¬â¢re 6 to 12. One year doesnââ¬â¢t make that big of a difference, but Secondary School (High School) resembles both ââ¬Å"Hà ¶gstadietâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Gymnasietâ⬠together. So from what I understand, you canââ¬â¢t choose a specific program like in Sweden, but you can choose some classes you want to take (other than the mandatory ones) in High School. When you graduate from Secondary School you can apply for a University, just like in Sweden. As you can tell there are a lot of similarities toà Australian and Swedish schools, but I found out that there are many differences as well. School uniforms for example, we donââ¬â¢t have any rules about dress code in Sweden, but over here itââ¬â¢s a part of life, at least for the students who attend High School. Almost every school has a special uniform that every student has to wear, even I have to wear one when I go to school. Even in gym class we wear matching shorts and shirts. I think those outfits are better because theyââ¬â¢re unisex, and the rest of the day the girls wear skirts while the boys wear pants. Iââ¬â¢m not very comfortable in skirts and dresses so I think that if you want to wear pants you should be able to! Itââ¬â¢s kind of nice not having to choose an outfit every morning, you only have one thing to wear and everybody else wears it too. Thereââ¬â¢s not any pressure about having the latest fashion or not changing it up every day. The only thing you have to worry about is bad hair-days! I have to admit that I wish we had to wear these in Sweden as wellâ⬠¦ Not only are they a gift from heaven for the morning-tired person, they make you feel a bit more fancy and formal too. Donââ¬â¢t get me wrong, itââ¬â¢s not that comfortable being formal all the time and Iââ¬â¢d probably get sick of wearing it every day, but I like the idea a lot at the moment. I never think it would work, introducing this to Sweden though. Everyone would lose their right to express themselves through their clothes. If we would have to wear school uniforms, I strongly vote for pants for the girls! Most students bring their own lunch to school. There is a cafeteria, but you have to pay for everything there. That is something I miss about Sweden, even though itââ¬â¢s not great food all of the time itââ¬â¢s still really convenient. Iââ¬â¢m having a hard time remembering to bring my lunch every dayâ⬠¦ That makes me really angry with myself because both of my host parents make really good food, especially sandwiches. I promise you, theyââ¬â¢re amazing! Public schools here are free and run by the government of state or territory theyââ¬â¢re in, just like in Sweden. Parents are asked pay a voluntary contribution fee and they can also contribute to camping trips and extracurricular activities, but itââ¬â¢s all voluntary. Something that also differs from Sweden is the fact that they have 4 semesters. The school year starts in early February and ends in December. They have short holidays between every semester and their summer holiday is in December and January, during Christmas! I know itââ¬â¢s really strange, but thatââ¬â¢s when the Australian summer is! I had no idea that the seasons were soà off over here, but I think itââ¬â¢s really amazing how the world works. Apparently all countries south of the equator have their summer during our winter, and their winter during our summer! A few weeks ago I got to be a part of the Australians celebration of ANZAC Day. ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. This day is special to Australians because of what happened on this date 1915. The First World War had just started and Australia wanted to create a reputation for themselves to the rest of the world, since theyââ¬â¢d only been a nation for 13 years. They joined forces with New Zealand and set out to take control over the Dardanelles (a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey) so that their allies could travel through. When ANZAC landed on Gallipoli in Turkey they were met by Turkish defending forces. A lot of Australian soldiers lost their lives and today the Australians take this day to remember not only them and their bravery, but every soldier who has died in any war or military operation Australiaââ¬â¢s been a part of. Each year the remembrance begins with memorial services in big cities all over the country, theyââ¬â¢re known as the ââ¬Å"Dawn Servicesâ⬠. Later in the day there are parades where ex-militaries march along. Aussies also celebrate this day off from work and school with drinking and games! They also have the Australia Day, their National Day. Iââ¬â¢m not going to be here for that because itââ¬â¢s celebrated on January 26th, but I really wish I were! They celebrate everything thatââ¬â¢s good about the country and being Australian, it sounds like a lot of fun! My host family tells me that you can see the Australian flag hanging from windows of cars and houses and that the whole neighborhood smells like barbeque. There are usually fireworks and music as well! Itââ¬â¢s more upbeat than the ANZAC Day. We donââ¬â¢t have anything like this in Sweden, which I think is a bit sad. What I mean is, we donââ¬â¢t really have a day where we remember something or celebrate just being Swedish. I feel like we donââ¬â¢t have that kind of love for our country that the Australians do. At least I know I donââ¬â¢t. I only enjoy our National Day because I donââ¬â¢t have to go to school. I honestly donââ¬â¢t even know why we celebrate it, and if I asked my friends Iââ¬â¢m sure they would say the same thing. It would be nice to feel that unity and pride that the Australians have. Weââ¬â¢ve been in wars, Iââ¬â¢m not sure how many or what kind, but we donââ¬â¢t take pride in them. We donââ¬â¢t have any war heroes we remember. During World War 1, Sweden was neutral. We didnââ¬â¢t officially pick a side; we didà everything we could to not get attacked by anyone. We let Germany use our railways to transport iron-stone, which kept us from getting involved in the war (even though that made us a part of Germanyââ¬â¢s success). I think weââ¬â¢re right not to take any pride in thatâ⬠¦ Something that also would be fun to experience here ââ¬Å"Down Underâ⬠is Christmas. Since their summer is during December the climate is at its warmest during Christmas. My friends told me that even though itââ¬â¢s sunny and warm everyone still decorates with snowmen and Christmas lights! Most families have a Christmas tree too. Here in Brisbane they apparently have a competition every year for who has the best Christmas lights. I would love to see all of the extremely decorated houses! We should do something like that at home, we should engage more! In some ways our counties spend Christmas alike, but some prospects are still very different. In Sweden, we open presents, eat delicious food and get a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. In Australia they only make the last preparations on Christmas Eve, because itââ¬â¢s all about Christmas Day. Children hope to find presents in stockings or under the tree when they wake up, families go to see their relatives and everyone (most people anyway) spend the evening with their loved ones. Some families eat dinner thatââ¬â¢s similar to Europeââ¬â¢s Christmas food, but most Australians barbeque or have a picnic on the beach or in the park. On the beach you can see surfing Santa Clauses too. It sounds really laid back and comfortable, so I would love to be able to experience it (even though itââ¬â¢s no real Christmas without snow!). Itââ¬â¢s hard to think of Swedish traditions when you donââ¬â¢t usually acknowledge them, but most traditions come with the holidays. Almost all of our holidays have religious significance, like Easter and Christmas for example, but these holidays are not really about what they originally mark in history (if youââ¬â¢re Christian). Easter is more about dressing up as a witch and knocking on doors collecting candy, than remembering Jesusââ¬â¢s crucifixion. Christmas is all about Donald Duck and opening presents, we donââ¬â¢t celebrate Jesus being born. This is the case in Australia too, except for the witches and Donald Duck. In Australia they celebrate Easter by organizing Easter egg hunts (mostly for the purpose of making the children happy), and youââ¬â¢ve probably heard of the ââ¬ËEaster Bunnyââ¬â¢? Well, over here theyââ¬â¢ve exchanged it for an ââ¬ËEaster Biblyââ¬â¢. A bibly is a small rodent, whoââ¬â¢s an endangered species and theyââ¬â¢re hoping this kind of advertisement is going to help saveà it. Besides, rabbits are considered pests in Australia as they destroy crops and other things. As you can tell there are a lot of both similarities and differences between Sweden and Australia, but they are both great counties! Unfortunately I only have a month left of my studies, but I am thinking about living here for a year or so when I graduate. I have fallen in love with this landâ⬠¦ Enough about me, how have you been? Unfortunately, however, he forgot to invite one of the oldest and most powerful of the fairies to the celebration of his daughter's christening. Because of his forgetfulness, the princess was sentenced to one hundred years of sleep and inactivity. She was saved by a prince who made his way to her bedside and awakened her with a kiss of true love. Of course, they celebrated a glorious wedding and lived happily ever after. Roxy Walston, the heroine of Louise Shivers' "Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail," like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella or Snow White, lived a fairy tale existence. All of the supporting roles were accounted for: her father, Will Stanton (the king); her mean stepmother, Ruth; her grandmother, Georgeanna (the fairy godmother); her husband, Aaron (the shining knight)' and her lover, Jack, as Prince Charming. Even the evil witch is symbolized by the aura of death and foreboding of the funeral home--always preyi ng, ready to devour the next unsuspecting victim. But unlike the princess in the fairy tale, Roxy's fairy tale ended when she was awakened from her "sleep" by Jack's kiss. The lovers had shared many a romantic, passionate kiss, but the kiss--the one which brought Roxy out of her trance--was the "spitty" one after Jack had confessed to murdering Aaron. At this moment Roxy awakened to her own self-awareness and freed herself from Jack's sensual, magic spell. Only then did she tap into the strength she never knew she had. It was that strength, at first as small as a tobacco seed, that enabled her to try to outlive her shame and move forward with her life as best she could. For one to understand and appreciate Roxy's vulnerability and passivity, a discussion of her childhood will place in proper perspective her family relationships. Will Stanton was a big-boned man, a giant with a soft heart. One can imagine the sheer delight of his little girl as he surprised her with tangerines at Christmastime. She would slip her hand down into his big pocket and feel the white sack lining, "looking for a Saturday nickel" (Shivers 119). In Roxy's eyes, her Daddy was omniscient, a virtual god. That idolization of her male parent is not unusual. Caryl Rivers, author of "Beyond Sugar and Spice," tells us that "to many a young girl, there is something magical about her father" (50). nicolelittle186http://www.blogger.com/profile/13485321557491943650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4200252232504817812.post-54073938306976899102020-01-15T04:58:00.001-08:002020-01-15T04:58:05.177-08:00Fast food restaurant EssayIntroduction: Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered to be fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with low quality preparation and served to the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away. History: The concept of ready-cooked food for sale is closely connected with urban development. In ancient Rome cities had street stands that sold bread and wine. A fixture of East Asian cities is the noodle shop. Flatbread and falafel are today ubiquitous in the Middle East. Popular Indian fast food dishes include vada pav, panipuri and dahi vada. In the French-speaking nations of West Africa, roadside stands in and around the larger cities continue to Sellââ¬âas they have done for generationsââ¬âa range of ready-to-eat, char grilled. Meat sticks known locally as brochettes. However, it claims to cater 50,000 guests every day. It has future expansion plans for more than 50 outlets every year, for next three years. Eating at home remains very much ingrained in Indian culture and changes in eating habits are very slow moving with barriers to eating out entrenched in certain sectors of Indian society. The growth in nuclear families, particularly in urban India has decreased drastically. India, exposure to global media and Western cuisine and an increasing number of women joining the workforce have had an impact on eating out trends. KFC is a brand and operating segment, called a ââ¬Å"conceptâ⬠of Yum! Brands since 1997 when that company was spun off from PepsiCo as Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. KFC primarily sells chicken in form of pieces, wraps, salads and sandwiches. While its primary focus is fried chicken, KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken products, side dishes and desserts. Outside North America, KFC offers beef based products such as hamburgers or kebabs, pork based products such as ribs and other regional fare. The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, Menu items. KFCââ¬â¢s specialty is fried chicken served in various forms. KFCââ¬â¢s primary product is pressure-fried pieces of chicken made with original recipe. The other chicken offering, extra crispy, is made using a garlic marinade and double dipping the chicken in flour before deep frying in a standard industrial kitchen type machine. Kentucky Grilled Chicken ââ¬â This marinated grilled chicken is targeted towards health-conscious customers. It features marinated breasts, thighs, drumsticks, and wings that are coated with the Original Recipe seasonings before being grilled. It has less fat, calories, and sodium than the Original Recipe fried chicken. Nutritional value KFC formerly used partially hydrogenated oil in its fried foods. This oil contains relatively high levels of trans fat, which increases the risk of heart disease. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) filed a court case against KFC, with the aim of making it use other types of oils or make sure customers know about Trans fat content immediately before they buy food. Advertising One of KFCââ¬â¢s latest advertisements is a commercial advertising its ââ¬Å"wicked crunch box mealâ⬠. The commercial features a fictional black metal band called ââ¬Å"Hellveticaâ⬠performing live, the lead singer then swallows fire. The commercial then shows the lead singer at a KFC eating the ââ¬Å"wicked crunch box mealâ⬠and saying ââ¬Å"Oh man that is hotâ⬠. In 2007, the original, non-acronymic Kentucky Fried Chicken name was resurrected and began to reappear on company marketing literature and food packaging, as well as some restaurant signage. KFC Business Strategy KFC fast-food chains are currently under the restaurant division of PepsiCo Incorporated. Some major threats include the changing attitudes of society toward healthier eating habits, KFC has more than 9,800 outlets located in 77 countries. In marketing, KFC restaurants are not restricted from locating within close proximity of other KFC restaurants. There are two alternative strategies for KFC. The first strategy involves keeping PepsiCo beverage division and snack foods division together, and a divestiture of PepsiCo restaurant division; selling Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC. MC Donaldââ¬â¢s About the company: McDonaldââ¬â¢s is the leading global foodservice retailer with more than 31,000 local restaurants serving more than 58 million people in 118 countries each day. More than 75% of McDonaldââ¬â¢s restaurants worldwide are owned and operated by independent local men and women. The strong foundation that he built continues today with McDonaldââ¬â¢s vision and the commitment of our talented executives to keep the shine on McDonaldââ¬â¢s Arches for years to come. To read more about McDonaldââ¬â¢s history, vision and executives, click on their links in the left menu. We drive our business momentum by focusing on what matters most to customers. Our owner/operators, suppliers and employees work together to meet customer needs in uniquely McDonaldââ¬â¢s ways. The powerful combination of entrepreneurial spirit and System wide alignment around our Plan to Win enables us to execute the best ideas with both large-scale efficiency and local flair. Products McDonaldââ¬â¢s predominantly sells hamburgers, various types of chicken sandwiches and products, French fries, soft drinks, breakfast items, and desserts. In most markets, McDonaldââ¬â¢s offers salads and vegetarian items, wraps and other localized fare. Portugal is the only country with McDonaldââ¬â¢s restaurants serving soup. This local deviation from the standard menu is a characteristic for which the chain is particularly known, and one which is employed either to abide by regional food taboos (such as the religious prohibition of beef consumption in India) or to make available foods with which the regional market is more familiar (such as the sale of McRice in Indonesia). Advertising. McDonaldââ¬â¢s has for decades maintained an extensive advertising campaign. In addition to the usual media (television, radio, and newspaper), the company makes significant use of billboards and signage, sponsors sporting events ranging from Little League to the Olympic Games, and makes coolers of orange drink with their logo available for local events of all kinds. Nonetheless, television has always played a central role in the companyââ¬â¢s advertising strategy. To date, McDonaldââ¬â¢s has used 23 different slogans in United States advertising, as well as a few other slogans for select countries and regions. At times, it has run into trouble with its campaigns. PROBLEMS OF INDUSTRY I. Environmental friendly products cost high: Government is legislating laws in order to keep check on the fast food industry and it is emphasizing more on the usage of bio-degradable and environment friendly products. But associated with this issue is the problem that fast food player faces ââ¬â the cost associated with the environment friendly product. They cost much higher than the normal products that companies uses for packaging or wrapping their products. II. Balance between societal expectation and companies economic Objectives: To balance a societyââ¬â¢s expectation regarding environment with the economic burden of protecting the environment. Thus, one can see that one side pushes for higher standards and other side tries to beat the standard back, thereby making it a arm wrestling and mind boggling exercise. Health related issues: obesity I. Studies have shown that a typical fast food has very high density and food with high density causes people to eat more then they usually need. II. Low calories food: Emphasis is now more on low calorie food. In this line McDonald has a plan to introduce all white meat chicken. Mcnuugget is with less fat and fewer calories. Together these words are used to modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or an entire clause. Also called a compound modifiers, compound adverbs are sometimes written as one word (e.g., somewhere), sometimes as one hyphenated word (self-consciously), and sometimes as two words (inside out). Multi-word adverbs are commonly called adverbial phrases. In the Oxford Modern English Grammar (2011), Bas Aarts notes that English allows a great variety of compounds and not everyone agrees exactly on how to delimit the class of compounds. Examples I came every day to see him, neglecting my other students and therefore my livelihood.(Bernard Malamud, The German Refugee. The Saturday Evening Post, 1964)Therefore is a compound adverb that has the largest number of occurrences in the Helsinki Corpus... Along with therefore, thereupon is the only other compound adverb that emerges in Middle English but continues into [ââ¬â¹Modern English] and up to the present day. (Aune Osterman, There Compounds in the History of English.Grammaticalization at Work, ed. by Matti Rissanen et al. Walter de Gruyter, 1997)Instead of ordering an immediate pursuit of the Confederate forces, McClellan waited overnight, and then timidly headed west to South Mountain, still believing that Lees dirty, hungry, and tired army heavily outnumbered his Union force. (Harold Brodkey, Verona: A Young Woman Speaks. Esquire, 1978)The worst of it was it got so hot. That was a bad time for me I tell you. I got pretty thirsty. (Obiora Chinedu Okafor, The African Human Rights System, Activist Forces and International Institutions. Cambridge University Press, 2007) Formal Compounds Several compound adverbs that can be classed in (iii) [i.e., temporal ordering subsequent to a given time reference] are found only in certain formal varieties of contemporary English: henceforth, henceforward, hereupon, thenceforward, thereafter, thereupon, whereupon. (Randolph Quirk et al., A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language, 2nd ed. Longman, 1985) A Minor Category [C]ompound adverbs are not very numerous in Present-day English. Some of them are morphologically opaque historical relics, such as the negative operator NOT, which goes back to the Old English noun phrase NAWHIT. It is questionable whether compounding with WHERE, THERE and HERE is still productive today. Many compound adverbs have become polyfunctional as a result of secondary grammaticalization. Many have also reduced their functional load in the course of time, including the conjuncts HOWEVER and THEREFORE... (Matti Rissanen, Introduction. Grammaticalization at Work, ed. by Matti Rissanen, Merja Kytà ¶, and Kirsi Heikkonen. This last summer I went to Cresent City and Eureka, California and had a good time. All though there was a lot of people in a suburban and it was very crammed. In the car there was me, my dad, stepmom, my sister Brenda, her fiance, and five of my other little siblings. It was one long ride to our first destination, Crescent City. ââ¬Å"How much longer?â⬠I asked my dad. ââ¬Å"About two more hours, we are about to stop and get drinks.â⬠he exclaimed, ââ¬Å"What do you want?â⬠ââ¬Å"Gatorade,â⬠I said, ââ¬Å"blue and red ones.â⬠My dad went inside to get some stuff and me and the others were outside. Once we got there there was immediately a surfboard outside that you could take a picture on, and of course I had to take a picture on it. When we went inside we barely had to wait because the next group was about to go on the tour of the place. The first thing we did was go to this feel pool where we got to touch starfish and plants. Then we went to the aquarium where we saw a bunch of fish, sharks, stingrays, and the underwater part of the seals. After the aquarium there was my two favorite parts of it all. First we went to the shark pool, here there was two sharks and one that was a brown color was still because it was nocturnal. The other one that was grey was just swimming around in a circle around the small pool. It was time to pet sharks! The still brown one was easier to pet, obviously. The grey one you had to pet once it came around to you. The shark petting was the part I was most excited about but the next event was my favorite. Next was the seal show! There were two seals, one did most of the tricks. The seal threw balls into hoops. She could jump really high and she loved to slide down a slide into the water. The show was so cute and I loved it so much. Sadly, the seal show was the last thing and we had to leave after. I am happy we went. Not only did it change the way people were governed, it spread the beliefs of nationalism and made average citizens feel pride in their country again. The Revolution also enabled Napoleon to rise to power and further spread nationalism and Enlightenment ideas across Europe. Nations of the world set objectives which they continually strive to achieve. These objectives which are regarded to be of benefit to the citizens of the country are collectively known as national interest. We will write a custom essay sample on Introduction to Roles of Army Engineers or any similar topic only for you Order Now The extent to which a nation can achieve its national interest and indeed the influence it wields in the international community depends largely on its level of development. Nation building literally connotes national development. In a contemporary society, the concept of national development is directly linked to the general well-being of a state and its people. National development or nation building is predicated on indices such as economic stability, peace and security of the state. The essence of any government therefore is to provide security and welfare for the citizenry to achieve stability and peace. Nation building is a continuous process. It represents the process whereby changes are effected within any society to generate wealth, create economic opportunities and bring about peace, stability and security. . Over the last half century, some advanced countries like the USA, China and Israel among others have implemented various plans towards development. One of such plans is the use of their military in national development. Historically, military involvement in nation building can be traced to socialist countries like Russia, China, Cuba and Vietnam where the military was engaged in developmental ac tivities such as agriculture and manufacturing. Later in the face of economic challenges, countries like Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Iraq also used their military in nation building through their military engineers for road construction and industrial development. This contributed to the development of their national economy. 3. A nation is defined as ââ¬Ëa large body of people united by common descent, culture or language, inhabiting a particular state or territoryââ¬â¢. On the other hand, building is ââ¬Ëthe business or task of constructing houses, factories, bridges and other large structuresââ¬â¢. Hence, nation building could be described as a structural transformation of all facets of national lives such as economic, political, social and technological endeavours in order to make a nation more viable for development. 4. Similarly,in developing countries like Nigeria, it has become imperative that the military be actively involved in nation building to compliment the efforts of all other sectors involved in such activities. The NA through the Nigerian Army Engineers (NAE) has been in the forefront of this drive, in addition to its role of the defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria. The NA also has the responsibility of aiding civil authority in disaster management or civil construction works which are normally carried out by NAE. However, the NAEhas the primary role of helping the NA to live, move and fight. These include construction of roads and bridges, reconstruction and rehabilitation of facilities and water supply. For example, the NAE constructed the first road to Mambilla Plateau, of the then Northern Region now Adamawa State, in the 1960s. The Corps was also involved in the construction of a bridge across River Rima and the reconstruction of Ayakoromo town in 2010. When the NAE plays these roles, it is inadvertently contributing to nation building. 5. It is pertinent to state that NAE evolved from the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) which dates back to the early Twentieth Century. The NAE were part of the Royal British Engineers which surveyed and fixed the boundaries of what is now known as Nigeria with the neighbouring French and German colonies. In spite of the contributions of the NAE in nation building, the corps encountered some challenges while performing their functions. These challenges include dearth of equipment, absence of legal backing and shortage of manpower among others. It is against this background that this paper seeks to examine these challenges in order to proffer viable solutions for the NA in supporting the NAE towards efficiently contributing to nation building. It is written for the Director Department of Land Warfare in partial fulfillment for the award of Pass Staff Course. 6. The purpose of this paper therefore is to examine the challenges and prospects of the contribution of NAE to nation building. The paper will discuss an overview of NAE and the contributions of NAE to nation building. It will further appraise the contributions of some other countries to nation building in order to draw lessons for NAE. Finally, it will examine the challenges and prospects of the NAEââ¬â¢s contribution to nation building. This paper will however be limited to NAEââ¬Ës contribution to nation building in terms of structural constructions and projects. The aspects of peace and security as part of nation building will not be discussed. It is assumed that the reader is conversant with the concept of nation building. This would therefore not be discussed in detail. AIM 7. The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenges and prospects of the contributions of NAE to nation building with a view to making recommendations. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â [ 1 ]. 1. They were locatedin Laguna de los Cerros, tres Zapotes, San Lorenzo, La Venta, and theTuxtla Mountains, in Mexico. The purpose of this report is to show howthe Olmec lived, their beliefs, and their spectacular art. The Olmec were a mother culture to later civilizations. The cultureof the Olmec started in Mexicos Gulf Coast between 1200 and 1400 B.C ,approximately between the Trojan war, and the golden age of Athens, andended about 3000 years ago. The Olmec were among the first Americans todesign ritual centres and raise earthen pyramids. On the pyramids therewere statues which were strategically placed as a shrine. As the Olmecculture gradually developed some Olmec villages grew strong andpowerful, while others were less fortunate. The villages shared theirresources, such as rubber and basalt. The Olmec had different socialranks, from workers such as fishers, farmers, traders and specialistssuch as artisans and sculptors, to rulers. Rulers were individuals whohad the power to float basalt down the river and to commission colossalstatues and other public work. The Olmec farmed and ate corn. They alsoate shellfish, fish, turtles, beans, deer, and dog. Perhaps the mostspectacular trait of the Olme c were that they used hieroglyphs. Theyused hieroglyphs to record dates, events, and to tell stories. Althoughthe Olmec were hard workers they still had time for a ceremonial ballgame. The Olmec had many beliefs. Among these beliefs were chanequeswhich were dwarf trixters who lived in water falls. They also had theirown beliefs in cosmology. The Olmec had natural shrines devoted to thehill on which the shrine was located and the water. The Olmec werebelieved to have a corn god. Jaguars were also worshipped religiously, perhaps because the jaguar was the most powerful predator. The Olmecbelieved that the jaguar brought rain. The men would sacrifice blood tothe jaguar, wear masks, dance, and crack whips to imitate the sound ofthunder. This ritual was done in May. The Olmec also made offerings ofjade figures to the jaguar. The Olmec had early achievements in art. Perhaps the mostincredible findings from the Olmec culture are the sculptures. The Olmecused wood, basalt and jade to make the statues. The wooden artifacts aresaid to be the oldest in Mesoamerica. The Olmec used basalt to makecolossal heads. The size of these heads ranged from 5 feet to 11 feettall. Some say the heads represent sacrificial offering. Others thinkthey portray the elite Olmec ancestors. These heads have also beeninterpreted as being warriors or ball players. Basalt was also used tocarve thrones. The Olmec used art to glorify rulers by making themmonuments of super natural creatures to portray them such as part human, part beast. The beast was usually the jaguar. It is believed that thesemonuments were annihilated after the death of the leader. The figurinesmade of jade were small and sexless. Some of the more elaborate statueswore extensive headdress with a long train, and rectangular chestplates, sat cross-legged, leaned forward and looked straight ahead. In conclusion the Olmec, Mesoamericas first civilization were amother culture to other civilizations. They had many beliefs, and hadearly achievements in elaborate art. The article, New light on theOlmec, was an interesting article but it was very repetitive. Even if youââ¬â¢re writing the most action-packed, plot-driven book where the characters are robots, itââ¬â¢s the human element of the story that is going to resonate with people looking for their next read.Ask yourself: are you more likely to read a book about a voyage to a newly discovered planet, or a book about someone who never saw Earth but knows they will never reach the destination planet of the spaceship they are on? The plotââ¬â¢s concept - traveling in space - may intrigue you, but the characters will hook you in.This article will help you develop characters your readers wonââ¬â¢t forget. Letââ¬â¢s start by looking inside. 5 tips for developing characters that readers won't be able to forget. To develop memorable characters, you'll need to:Justify the characterââ¬â¢s reason for existence by establishing the character's story goal and motivation.Give the character an external and internal conflict.Decide whether the character is static or dynamicGive the character a past.Develop the character's external characteristics to make them distinguishableEach point is a step towards deepening a character's depth. By the end of the process, you should emerge with a fully-realized, multidimensional character - and we'll take you through each stage in this post in order to get you there. That means that we'll start, of course, with internal character development. You can think of internal character development as a circle: one that starts and ends with your characterââ¬â¢s fundamental goals and motivations. All the other decisions you make along the way will be informed by and affect those two things.1. Establish the characterââ¬â¢s story goals and motivationsYour characterà ¢â¬â¢s current goal is why the story exists - and why itââ¬â¢s worth telling - right now. Itââ¬â¢s what your character wants from the bookââ¬â¢s plot and it will propel à their inner journey. Without it, the overall narrative arc would fall totally flat.Letââ¬â¢s look at a few character goal examples:Harry Potterââ¬â¢s goal is to defeat Lord VoldemortBilboââ¬â¢s goal is to help the dwarves reclaim the kingdom of EreborHamletââ¬â¢s goal is to avenge his murdered father Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy change for love (image: BBC)Reinforcing your protagonist through secondary characters Often times, authors write static secondary characters to act as a pillar around which a dynamic character can develop. Think of Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird: he changes little throughout the course of the novel. But it is his steadfast belief in justice that guides Scout from a state of childhood innocence into a young girl with a strong sense of right and wrong.Or you might want to consider writing a ââ¬Å"foilâ⬠: a character who contrasts the protagonist, and is used to highlight particular qualities of the main character. For instance, Harry Potterââ¬â¢s foil is Draco Malfoy.Develop characters by determining the shape of their arc.à Ask yourself:How much will they change? What inspires their change?Do they change for the better?Do they change for the worse?Do they change the world and/or people around them?4. Give the character a pastJust as your own history has contributed to the person you are today, so does your characterââ¬â¢s. You should develop you r characterââ¬â¢s past as much as possible, but itââ¬â¢s especially important to create and zero-in on experiences and memories that inform the character we see in the story.Develop characters through their history. Ask yourself:What moments from their past have played a pivotal role in who they are now?Do they have any suppressed memories? What are some of their happiest memories?5. Develop the character's external characteristicsYes, the internal goals and motivations are the "heart" of a character. But that doesn't mean that their external characteristics should just be an after-thought. While the fact that your protagonist has blonde hair may not impact the plot, it can only benefit you as the author to have an exhaustive composition of them. All compelling characters need a past. Fill out this questionnaire to determine yours. Early in your character development, put a bit of time into sketching out your protagonist's external features, including their...Communication stylePhysical appearanceMannerismsYou can develop characters through physical characteristics as well. Ask yourselfâ⬠¦What do they look like? Does their appearance play a role in the story? How do they interact with others - what is their communication style like? How do their mannerisms contribute to how others perceive them?To help give yourself a more holistic image of your character, check out our ready-made character profile template. It will prompt you to define external elements like posture and distinguishing features, to internal elements like their relationship with their mother and how theyââ¬â¢re perceived by strangers.Or if you prefer to keep your character notes organized online, you can check out the character builder tool over at One Stop for Writers. It's a super-thorough guide to character creation that guides you thro ugh filling out their backstory, personality, and other details that contribute to their overall arc. Before you know it, youââ¬â¢ll find you have acquired a new close friend - albeit an imaginary one.Do you have your own tips for character development?
